By Ibrahim Kasita (New Vision Online)Further huge oil deposits have been discovered in the Butiaba region on Lake Albert, Tullow Oil, a UK exploration group, said on Tuesday (20th January 2009). “Buffalo-Giraffe is one of the largest recent onshore oil discoveries in Africa,” Aidan Heavy, the Tullow chief executive officer, said in a statement. “Combined with our other finds in the region, we have now clearly exceeded the thresholds for basin development.” Mr Heavy added that options for commercialisation and first oil production were being fast-tracked. The Giraffe-1 exploration well, which is located in the Butiaba region of Uganda Block 1, has over 38 metres of net oil pay within an 89 metre gross oil bearing interval. These results demonstrate Giraffe to be a down-dip extension of the Buffalo discovery, making this the largest discovery in the Lake Albert Rift Basin to date. Tullow has interests in three licences in the Lake Albert Rift Basin in Uganda. Tullow operates Block 2 with a 100% interest and has a 50% interest in Blocks 1 and 3A which are operated by Heritage Oil (50%).
